SKE48 is one of Japan’s most prominent and influential
female idol groups. They are based in Nagoya's Sakae district of Aichi
Prefecture and hence the name ‘SKE’. They are known for having engaging
personalities, high-energy performances and massive fan base globally. Yasushi
Akimoto is the mastermind behind the AKB48 franchise and SKE48 has become a
cultural phenomenon since its inception in 2008. With their catchy songs,
energetic performances, ‘strong bond to its fanbase’ approach, inspiring
individual stories of its members, talented artists and vibrant energy, SKE48
has built a massive following both in Japan and the rest of the world.
As a sister group of another group of the highly successful
AKB48 family, which is also one of Japan's most influential pop groups, SKE48
has cemented its place in the J-Pop scene. They have a constantly evolving
roster of members, distinct style and unique concepts. SKE48 has revolutionized
the Japan’s entertainment scene. Let’s explore their journey, music and unique
aspects of SKE48, which set them apart in the idol world and what makes SKE48 a
powerhouse in the Japanese idol industry. This blog post will explore their
musical impact, origin, roles and structure within the broader Japanese idol
industry.
What is an idol group in Japan’s music industry?
An idol (アイドル pronounced as ‘aidoru’) is a kind of
entertainer marketed purely for appeal, beauty and personality in Japan’s
pop culture (J-Pop). A team of idols under a band name is an idol group. They
are remarkable singers with training in side-performance skills like acting,
dance and modelling. Idols are commercialized through endorsements and merchandise
by talent-seeking agencies while maintaining a parasocial relationship with
a “financially loyal” consumer fanbase.
Background
SKE48 was founded in 2008 by producer Yasushi Akimoto, who
is also responsible for creating an immensely successful group in Japan called
‘AKB48’. Yasushi Akimoto is a man. AKB48 is a network of sister groups spread
across Japan and overseas. Despite receiving international offers to expand
AKB48 group, Yasushi Akimoto chose to use Nagoya for his project. Each group
follows a similar concept but operates independently in it’s designated region.
The concept behind the 48 groups and all their sister groups (which includes SKE48)
is to create idols that are accessible to fans. The concept of ‘idols you can
meet’ became the foundation for these sister groups.
To embody this, the groups regularly perform live at their
own exclusive theatres, merchandise events and ‘Handshake Events’ where fans
have the opportunity to meet or interact with the members in person as an
integral part of their identity. While AKB48 is based in Tokyo, SKE48 is based
in Sakae District of Nagoya. Hence, they came up with the group name ‘SKE’ which
is abbreviated from Sakae. This regional aspect gives SKE48 a unique flavour
and is helping them to cultivate a dedicated fan base both in Nagoya and across
Japan.
Mr. Yasushi Akimoto, founder of the AKB48 group and their sister groups |
Like other 48 Groups, SKE48 is divided into several teams
like Team S, Team KII and Team E. They each have their identity and own group members.
This system allows for a wide variety in performances and opportunities for
many Japanese girls to shine. They may not be in the spotlight of the main
singles but the group gives them an exposure to J-Pop fans. Their home theatre
is located in Sunshine Sakae of Nagoya.
Their early humble beginnings (2008 to 2011)
SKE48 debuted on October 5, 2008 with their first ever
theatre performance. Their first-generation auditions attracted many aspiring
idols and the group quickly established itself as a major player within the
Japanese idol industry. SKE48’s first single was titled ‘Tsuyokimono Yo’. It
was released in the year 2009 and hence marking their first step into the J-Pop
mainstream. The release was roughly about a year after the group’s formation. In
the beginning, the group faced challenges in gaining recognition outside of
Nagoya. But with constant exposure through various media outlets and the
support of AKB48 fans, they began slowly building a loyal fanbase.
While their early singles received moderate success, it
wasn't until 2010's single ‘Aozora Kataomoi, that the group began gaining
nationwide attention. The momentum continued with their breakthrough single ‘Pareo
Wa Emerald’. It had topped the Oricon charts and solidified their place in the
idol industry. By 2011, SKE48's singles started ranking highly on the Oricon
charts, proving that the group was a growing power in the entertainment world.
The above video is a performance of SKE48 on December 27th of the year 2008 at NHK Concert Hall in Tokyo (Japan). Their music has always centred around themes of friendship,
love, self-empowerment and youthfulness. Over the years, SKE48 has experimented
with different genres from upbeat J-Pop anthems to emotional ballads. They are
successfully creating a diverse discography that appeals to a wide range of
fans.
Rise to national stardom (2012 to 2015)
SKE48’s popularity surged during this period between the
years 2012 and 2015. Their singles like ‘Kataomoi Finally’ (2012) and ‘Choco No
Dorei’ (2013) became very major hits. These songs tackled diverse themes
transitioning from love and heartbreak to friendship and resilience. Notably,
Kataomoi Finally explored tabooed themes of same-gender attraction. Although
common today, it was an unusual topic for Japanese mainstream idol groups in
that decade.
In 2013, several SKE48 members ranked highly in the annual AKB48 general elections. This was further important in solidifying their place in
Japan’s pop culture. Members like Rena Matsui and Jurina Matsui (often referred
to as the ‘Matsui duo’) became household names. They were key figures in the
group for enhancing the group’s profile and reputation.
Evolution of SKE48 from 2016 to the present
In recent years, the SKE48 group has continued to evolve. They
had many original members graduating and newer faces stepping into the
spotlight. The group's newer generation of members has worked hard to maintain
the group's popularity, even though the landscape of idol music is changing due
to tastes and times.
In the year 2018, SKE48 celebrated it’s 10th anniversary
with a grand concert at Nagoya Dome. It brought back memories and cemented
their place in Japanese idol history. Long-time ace Jurina Matsui also became
the core of AKB48’s 2018 single ‘Teacher Teacher’. It became a significant
moment since it showcased her prominence not only within SKE48, but also within
the entire 48 family.
Discography and music
SKE48’s music is characterized by an eclectic mix of
high-energy and upbeat songs with more emotional ballads. Their lyrics and
songs often have the reflecting themes of dreams, perseverance and youth. These
songs are infused with catchy melodies and memorable choreography. The group is
famous for it’s powerful choreography and lively stage presence which helps the
group stand out in the highly competitive J-Pop industry. Their debut single
‘Tsuyoki Mono Yo’ was released in the year 2009 and marked the dawn of their
skyrocketing to popularity. Over the years, the group has produced a string of
successful albums and singles. Some of their most notable songs are as follows.
1) Pareo Wa Emerald (2011) – This is one of their most
iconic summer hits filled with energy and joy, establishing SKE48 as a
feel-good idol group.
2) Banzai Venus (2011) – A high-energy track that showcased
the group's powerful dance moves.
3) Sansei Kawaii! (2013) – A cheerful idol-style anthem that
quickly became favourite among fans.
4) Coquettish Juutai Chuu (2015) – A song that highlighted
the fun and quirky side of SKE48.

The heart of SKE48 – Theatre performances
Theatre performances serve as the heart of SKE48 artistry. One of the unique aspects of SKE48 is having it’s own theatre to showcase their work. The theatre experience is designed to be different from large-scale concerts. While concerts may cater to tens of thousands of fans at once, theatre performances are much smaller. This kind of unique entertainment facility helps them in fostering a personal connect between the fans and the idols. It ends up creating a dynamic and interactive fan experience that’s extremely rare in the world of pop music.
The group’s dedicated theatre is located in Nagoya’s
Sunshine Sakae Building on the second floor. It is a shopping center. Much like
AKB48, the group idols conduct regular performances in their theatre. The theatre
serves as a perfect bridge between the idols and their fans. Those who love
SKE48’s theatre shows usually flock to these intimate shows where they can
experience the idols up close and personal. Fans being treated with such intimate
live-pop performances get to enjoy the art and energy of the group up close.
These performances feature not only their most popular singles but also
original stage songs. Fans can apply for tickets to attend the theatre shows. Try
this if you get to visit Nagoya.

These performances are always organized by teams. They each have
their own set of members which allows for a variety of lineups and song
choices. This system is very entertaining and never boring for fans because no
two performances are an identical type. The theatre’s rotating setlist keeps
the performances fresh and while also offering the group’s members a platform
to develop their dancing, MC skills and singing. Currently, SKE48 is divided
into 3 main teams. They are Team S, Team KII and Team E. Each of these teams
come with its own personality and set of core members.
Iconic SKE48 members
Over the years, SKE48 has been a home to many standout
members who have helped shape the group’s identity. Some of the most notable
members include are listed below.
1) Jurina Matsui – She is one of the original members who

greatly recognized for her immense popularity, leadership and talent. Jurina greatly
rose to prominence because of her extraordinary rizz. Known for her mature
stage presence and incredible talent, she was often the core of SKE48's
singles. She was a prominent figure not just in SKE48 but also in the group AKB48.
She was frequently ranking high in the annual AKB48 Senbatsu Elections and even
won first place in the year 2018. She had played a key role in much of AKB48's

Auditions and graduations or rotating lineups of SKE48
One of the most enduring and unique aspects of SKE48 and the
larger 48 Group structure is its system of regular auditions and ‘graduations’.
Graduation is a significant event in the life of any ‘48 Group’ idol. Members do
eventually move on from the group by way of Senbatsu Elections and Janken
Taikai events. They move on to pursue careers in other fields such as acting, modelling
or solo music careers. Their exit from the group is called a graduation in the
Japan’s music industry.
This system keeps the group very dynamic. New talents are
constantly introduced while older members eventually "graduate" out
of the group to pursue different opportunities or solo careers. This allows the
group to evolve and remain fresh while still being to maintain it’s core
identity. The audition processes are known for being competitive. They are held
once every few years, which go on attracting thousands of hopefuls. Once
selected, the new members become ‘Kenkyuusei’ or trainees. And then, through
fan engagements and rigorous training, they may eventually be absorbed into one
of the three main teams.
The entrance to SKE48's theatre |
Jurina Matsui's graduation in 2021 had literally marked the
end of an era for SKE48. She had been a central figure of the SKE48 idol group for
more than a decade. As stated earlier, she had joined the group when she was
only 11 years old. SKE48 has also launched the careers of several group members.
Their graduates have since gone on to become successful actresses, entertainers
and TV personalities. It clearly demonstrates the group's strong track record
in developing talent in Japan, in particularly for girls and young women. These group members (along with many others) have played a very vital role in shaping
SKE48’s identity as a top-tier idol group in Japan.
The idea of graduation is significant in the 48 Group
culture. Idol members who have gained enough experience and popularity, often
announce their graduation from the group to pursue solo endeavours in acting,
modeling, music or various other Japanese entertainment fields. As for the fans,
graduations are very emotional moments. They have to bid farewell to their favourite
members while accommodating and welcoming new talent.
Senbatsu Election and Janken Taikai
SKE48, like other 48 Group members, participates in the annual
‘AKB48 Group General Election’ or in Japanese called ‘Senbatsu Sousenkyo’. In
this yearly voting event, the fans vote for their favourite members across the
different sister groups. The results determine the lineup for the group’s next
major single. The members with the most votes get to participate in the next
AKB48 single. This election is a significant event in Japan’s idol world. It’s
not just because of the competition but also because it gives fans the power to
directly influence the group’s activities.
Honouring a winner idol of the Senbatsu Election |
Winning these elections and featuring on the next AKB48 production is a highly coveted opportunity in the Japan music industry. Over the years, several SKE48 members have ranked highly in these elections, which in turn has ended up bringing acclaim and recognition to the group. Other notable events include the ‘Janken Taikai’ or the Japanese rock-paper-scissors tournament. In Janken Taikai, the idol members compete in a fun and competitions with twists to earn spots in upcoming singles and special projects.
These events not only highlight the group members’
personalities but also involve fans in determining the future of the group’s
next lineup. SKE48 members have consistently performed well in these elections.
In the year 2018, Jurina Matsui ended up ranking first in Senbatsu Elections.
The election system plays a pivotal role in shaping the dynamics within the
group. It also reflects the changing tastes and preferences of the music fanbase
in Japan.
The fans’ experience
What sets SKE48 (and the 48 Groups, in general) apart from
other J-Pop acts is the level of fan involvement. Through regular events like ‘Handshake
Event’, fans have an opportunity to meet and interact with their favourite
idol members. This close connection builds a deep sense of loyalty among fans.
It offers a special bond of following their favourite artists’ journeys from
trainees to top-ranking idols. SKE48's live concerts are also a massive crowd
puller which has become viral for their energetic performances, flashy costumes
and synchronized dance routines. Fans often participate by chanting and waving
light sticks. Such events culminate in creating an electric atmosphere that
brings everyone together.
